Becoming a Justice of the Peace
The honorary and ancient role of Justice of the Peace is a very rewarding role which enables one to serve the community in many ways.
Australian Justices of the Peace are appointed in and for each State and Territory by the Attorney-General or Governor of each State or Territory. The links below provide access to detailed information on the appointment process for each jurisdiction:
The Commonwealth of Australia does not appoint Justices of the Peace to act in relation to Commonwealth matters. Instead, Commonwealth legislation has provisions to enable a Justice of the Peace from a State or Territory to act in relation to Commonwealth matters within their own State or Territory.
Further advice on the process may be obtained by contacting the relevant association of JPs.
